OUTLAND Staff Writer The Historic Edenton Candlelight Tour and accom panying holiday events will begin this Friday, December 13. Sponsored by the Edenton Historical Commission, the homes tour begins at 4 p.m., with the related events start ing at 1 p.m. The streets of downtown Edenton are beautifully lit and decorated. Homes are aglow with warm Christmas colors and the aromas of the holidays linger in the air. Owners of the homes that are part of the tour are busy making sure every thing is perfect for the many visitors that will soon arrive. Marion Goodman has used in genuity and lights to trans form her dining room into a beautiful, twinkling fare of sil ver and gold. Nancy' Downum has brought in a variety of the abundant greenery found in her yard to surround delicate candles and ribbons. “I am really excited,” says Marion Goodman. “I love this time of year and sharing our home will be wonderful.” The ladies have taken a lot of time and care in preparing their homes and the anticipation is mounting. “Everything seems Nancy Roberson, (left photo) and Marion Goodman (above) will join their husbands, Jerry and Livy, in warmly welcoming visitors to their homes during this weekend's annual Christmas Candlelight Tour. A wa terfront Oyster Roast begin ning at 7 p.m. will add the fi nal, palate-teasing touch to an evening of celebration on Fri day and Saturday evenings. On Friday evening while guest enjoy succulent oysters prepared by Leon Nixon’s Ca tering they can listen to the songs of carolers filling the air starting at 6 p.m. at the Court house Green. On Saturday, December 14, at 11 a.m. the Edenton-Chowan Christmas Parade will kick off a second day of events and tours. The Chowan Arts Coun cil will be hosting Confection Perfection where visitors can savor the expertly prepared sweet delicacies of the holi days. Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and again during the 11 a.m. worship service the Edenton Baptist will' be pre senting “A Service of Lessons and Carols”. ----J Commissioners hold swearing-in BY HELEN K. OUTLAND Staff Writer The Chowan County Com missioners meeting opened with mixed emotions Monday evening with the swearing in of newly elected commission ers and the retirement of Chairman Pete Dail. The newest member of the board, Jimmy. Alligood along with re-elected members, Louis Belfield and Wayne Goodwin were sworn in by County Clerk, Nancy Morgan. Other matters on the agenda included the election of a new chairman and vice-chairman. In response to a motion by Commissioner Harry Winslow, Louis Belfield was named Chairman of the Chowan County Commissioners. Chairman of the Chowan County Commissioners Pete Dail officially retired from the board Monday nigl/, praising the county and fellow board members. “Chowan County has been a wonderful place in which to live and raise a fam ily,” Commissioner Dail said. “And for sixteen years I have had the honor of working for a great county and with some fine commissioners.” “It has been a pleasure work ing with Mr. Dail,” said Com missioner Wayne Goodwin. “He will be missed.” Commis sioner George Jones presented Chairman Dail with the name plaque that had designated his seat on the board since 1987. “Pete Dail has served this county well,” said Jones. “For See COUNTY On Page 3-A Chamber gift certificates a hit BY REBECCA BUNCH Editor Are you one of those people who find it hard to buy for others because you’re never quite sure what they want? Well, just in time for Christ mas, the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce is stepping in to help shoppers • take the guesswork out of gift giving. As a special service to its members, the Chamber is co ordinating a gift certificate program for goods and ser vices. Chamber Membership Director Brenda Spruill says its appeal is simple. “Our pro gram allows the recipient to choose where and what they would like for a gift,” she ex plained. “From auto repair to clothing, gasoline to grocer ies, we’ve got it all. Simply put, no gift you could possi bly give would be more flex ible.” Introduced just prior to the holiday season, the gift cer tificates are proving very popular, Spruill said. She said the Chamber has al ready sold over $18,000 worth of the certificates, adding that a “good mix of mer chants” where the certifi cates can be redeemed is making the certificates a very attractive purchase for holiday shoppers. BY REBECCA BUNCH Editor An interest in support edu cational efforts for students, and a desire to support an important local restoration project, prompted members of the Edenton-Chowan Kiwanis Club to devote their 2003 Christmas medallion to a depiction of the Kadesh AME Zion Church, built in 1897. The church has recently become the focus of a mas sive restoration effort. In a show of support for the project, said club spokesman Larry McLaughlin, “For the year 2003, the Kiwanis have donated one hundred medal lions to the Kadesh AME Zion Church to help with their plans to restore their church on West Gale Street in Edenton. OUTLAND Staff Writer As Christmas approaches most people are absorbed in shopping, decorating, and pre paring or sampling the sweet delicacies readying waistlines for those elastic waist jogging pants. However, for some of the Hispanic citizens of Chowan and surrounding counties, the See HEARTS On Page 3-A 'Holidays' section in newspaper Today’s Chowan Herald fea tures a special section entitled “Winter Holidays”. “Winter Holidays” is a supplemental insert designed to add an extra educational component to the newspaper, especially for the use of News paper in Education programs. Teachers can enjoy the use of this resource in their class rooms, students appreciate something designed just for them, and families can read and discuss them together.
